Dr. Jean Moore is a lifetime advocate, educator and community volunteer leader. She has held posts with the Canadian Mental Health Association in BC and Alberta, as well as at the national level. Dr. Moore has also lent her skills to First Call: BC’s Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition and Theatre Terrific, a non-profit that provides opportunities for artists of all abilities to develop performance skills and collaborate in theatrical production.
The Dr. Jean Moore Endowment Fund in Child and Youth Mental Health is named to reflect Dr. Moore’s passion and influence. With 1 in 7 kids in BC (over 140,000 children and teens) experiencing a mental illness, Dr. Moore has long maintained that the negative impacts of mental illness and addiction can be prevented though early identification and intervention.
Purpose of the Fund
To enhance, through innovation, the lives of children and youth living with or at risk for mental illness.
CMHA BC has a particular focus on child and youth mental health. The organization conducted a province-wide consultation with youth and family members, the results of which have informed the development of the Child and Youth Mental Health Plan for British Columbia. CMHA BC continues to lead in the development of programs that support child and youth mental health, such as Confident Parents: Thriving Kids, a 12-week coaching program for parents whose children show early signs of behavioural issues.
Contributions to the Dr. Jean Moore Endowment Fund in Child and Youth Mental Health support a fund held in trust, in perpetuity. Annual accrued interest is used to support priorities in child and youth mental health and addiction issues, as identified by the Directors of the Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Division.
Launched in April 2006 with an initial $5,000 donation and matched by CMHA BC, the fund now totals $83,798 (as of March 31st, 2016).
